ABOUT

Mx. Oops' current project, EXILE, will consist of an album, live performance, and an exhibition of handmade costumes. The album paints a fragmented picture of a future, circa 2145, soon after a quasi-apocalypse. Only medicine healers and those intimate with Nature have thrived after the collapse of the global economy. We see glimpses of their ceremonies to rebuild humanity, and preparations for travels to other inhabitable planets. The live performance will have a visual display of ceremonial costumes. These garments are artifacts from the future people of whom Mx. Oops is a descendant.

Themes of spiritual transformation, gender diversity, sacred space, and connection to Nature are woven through the album, which is the core of the project. It will include 7 original songs, totaling approximately 30 minutes. The cadence and lyricism in the album evoke the tradition of experimental Hip Hop, although, musical genres include Hip Hop, House, Drum and Bass, and Dubstep. Urban Dance forms, including: House, Vogue, Breakin’, and J-Sette. Intersectional embodiment is a core theme in EXILE.

Mx. Oops’ name (pronounced ‘mix’) represents this through a blend of genres, and is characterized by an ever-shifting mixture of influences. The threads of urban dance, meditation, and futurism come together to form a hybrid epistemology. Connections are explored between: rapping and Vedic chanting; urban dance and yoga practice; indigeneity and post apocalyptic urbanity. Perennial Philosophy, the study of shared mystical aspects of world religions, creates a broad framework for these comparisons. Yoga Philosophy, and specifically the Yoga Sutras, are referenced throughout the album. This project combines urban arts, contemporary art, and spiritual practice with the intention of articulating formal resonances and dissonances between them.
